Forecast Discussion: July 25 to July 30 - The Soberanes Wildfire continues to burn in the Garrapata State Park Area south of Carmel Highlands. The fire location is mostly above the cooling influence of the marine layer so the fire activity potential remains high. Although southwest winds aloft have been transporting most of the smoke plume aloft and off to the northeast, winds today will be more variable today sending smoke in a variety of directions. A weak trough is passing over the area today may transport smoke in a more northerly direction toward Carmel Valley and Monterey Peninsula. Low level smoke may also drain westward toward the Big Sur coastline. Although smoke has been visible from many locations around the area and has resulted in some degradation of air quality, most of the plume has remained aloft. Consequently, ground level concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) are generally remaining in the MODERATE air quality category of EPA’s Air Quality Index (AQI). However, localized areas near the fire or where more of the plume may reach the ground can be expected to degrade below the level of the air quality standard for PM2.5 and therefore reach the UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS category. Persons sensitive to smoke should shelter in place and close windows, or if possible seek relief by leaving the area. High pressure builds in Tuesday through Thursday possibly contributing to further degradation of air quality. The District will update these assessments depending on the evolution of the fire and any related air quality impacts.
