Forecast Discussion: Wednesday and Thursday are Spare the Air Days in the Sacramento region. An upper-level ridge of high pressure will continue to build over northern California, reducing atmospheric mixing and producing sunny skies and triple-digit temperatures in the Sacramento area. These weather conditions will increase the production of ground-level ozone. In addition, lingering smoke from the Soberanes Fire in Monterey County will continue to impact the Sacramento region, enhancing ozone formation. As a result, ozone levels will be Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups on both days. Friday, light to moderate southwesterly winds will aid pollutant dispersion, especially during the afternoon and evening. However, temperatures above 100F will continue to support ozone formation, and lingering smoke from the Soberanes Fire will enhance ozone formation. These conditions, combined with pollutant carryover from previous days, will keep ozone levels Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.
