Forecast Discussion: Wednesday is an Air Quality Action day for the Philadelphia metropolitan area for Code Orange (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups or USG) ozone! It will be hot and mostly sunny in the afternoon on Wednesday. Calm winds overnight and through the morning will become light and southwesterly in the afternoon as a cold front approaches from the west. The period of stagnation overnight will allow ozone precursors to accumulate, setting the stage for ample ozone production in the afternoon. The presence of Tropical Storm Hermine off of the Delmarva/NJ coast may add an additional boost of subsidence, but it is not clear how strong or organized the tropical system will be. If there is more afternoon cloud cover than expected, either from the approaching front or from Hermine, then ozone will be limited to the Moderate range. Particles will remain in the low Moderate range due to the period of morning stagnation and plenty of atmospheric humidity. **Extended Forecast: The cold front will move through the forecast area on Thursday morning, trigger a round of thunderstorms in the morning and again in the afternoon. Both ozone and particles will drop down into the Good range. A seasonably cool and delightfully dry air mass will build into the region on Friday. Ozone and particles will drop lower into the Good range as a result. -Huff
