Forecast Discussion: Forecast discussion for December 26 to 31: A cold and dry air mass from the interior regions of Canada has settled into the area due to a stationary high amplitude (tall) ridge located in the Eastern Pacific. This has brought some of the coldest temperatures of this winter to the area, with many inland valleys seeing overnight temperatures well below freezing. Although the narrow offshore ridge continues to grow over the weekend, significant air stagnation is not expected to develop. This is because the Central Coast is expected to be in a transition zone between the offshore high and a deep trough which extends all the way to the Arctic Circle covering much of the Inter-Mountain West. A stagnant atmosphere is not likely to develop when extreme large scale features are in relatively close proximity to one another. The brisk new air mass that has settled into the area should also bring GOOD air quality to most areas. In the San Lorenzo Valley Smoke Sensitive Area (SLV SSA), PM2.5 AQIs can be expected to reach the MODERATE air quality category, with short-term overnight excursions into the lower UNHEALTY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS category due to wood smoke from residential heating. At this time no spare the Air declarations are planned for the SLV SSA.
