Forecast Discussion: Wednesday, July 23: A cold front will gradually move through the Buckeye State, enhancing vertical mixing in the atmosphere and producing cloudy skies and widespread showers and thunderstorms in the Mahoning Valley. These weather conditions will reduce ozone formation; however, pollutant carryover from previous days will keep AQI levels Moderate for particles. Thursday, July 24: Moderate north-northwesterly winds behind the departing cold front will disperse pollutants and bring a cleaner, drier air mass into Youngstown-Warren, reducing particle production and leading to Good AQI levels. Friday, winds will weaken as surface high pressure moves across northeastern Ohio, reducing pollutant dispersion. In addition, mostly sunny skies and warm afternoon temperatures will support ozone formation, resulting in Moderate AQI levels. Saturday and Sunday, light to moderate south-southwesterly winds will develop ahead of an approaching cold front, transporting additional pollutants into the Mahoning Valley. Furthermore, sunny and warm conditions will continue to enhance ozone formation. Therefore, AQI levels will remain Moderate on both days. Monday, a cold front will gradually move through Ohio, shifting winds to west-northwesterly and producing mostly cloudy skies and widespread showers and thunderstorms in the Mahoning Valley. These conditions will effectively disperse pollutants and reduce ozone formation, lowering AQI levels to Good.
