Forecast Discussion: Thursday, September 3: A strengthening upper-level ridge of high pressure over the eastern U.S. will decrease atmospheric mixing in Youngstown-Warren, and light northwesterly winds will reduce pollutant dispersion. In addition, mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures will enhance ozone formation. Therefore, despite increasing clouds and scattered thunderstorms in the evening, AQI levels will be Moderate. Friday, September 4: Partly to mostly cloudy skies will limit ozone formation, and scattered thunderstorms will enhance atmospheric mixing. However, light southeasterly winds will gradually transport regional pollutants into the Mahoning Valley, and increased moisture near the surface will enhance particle levels. As a result, AQI levels will continue to be Moderate. Saturday through Labor Day, the upper-level ridge of high pressure will increase stability across the Mahoning Valley, reducing mixing and dispersion. Additionally, sunny skies and temperatures near 90F will enhance ozone formation. Therefore, AQI levels will remain Moderate in Youngstown-Warren on all three days. Tuesday, increasing clouds will inhibit ozone production in northeast Ohio. However, pollutant carryover from Labor Day weekend will keep AQI levels Moderate.
