Forecast Discussion: Forecast Discussion October 1 to 5: High pressure steadily builds over the West Coast, leading to classic fall offshore flow conditions. This will lead to elevated temperatures and low humidity across the region, including the coast where the marine layer will be pushed well offshore. Gusty north winds may also be encountered over higher terrain. The marine layer gradually re-develops late in the weekend resulting in cooler temperatures, at least along the coast. As the atmosphere stabilizes during this regime, AQIs can be expected to increase, with ozone related AQIs possibly reaching the MODERATE air quality category over inland areas and PM2.5 AQIs also reaching the MODERATE category due to the migration of land based aerosols toward the coast. With hot temperatures and low humidity in place over our drought stressed region, fire weather concerns will also be elevated during this period. Please also be aware that due to the extraordinarily dry conditions caused by the long-term drought, Cal Fire has SUSPENDED OPEN BURNING in the State Responsibility Areas of Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito Counties. During these extremely dry conditions, residents are also cautioned about the high risk of causing a wildfire when starting any kind of fire near dry grass and brush.
