Forecast Discussion: A period of poor air quality is possible this weekend, with particle concentrations peaking on Sunday. Particle concentrations were in the upper Moderate range on Friday in southern Delaware due to persistent cloud cover and morning snow showers; these upper Moderate concentrations will carry over into Saturday. At the same time, a strong Arctic high pressure system will slowly move overhead, which will cause surface winds to stagnate Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon. A persistent layer of snow on the ground, especially in southern Delaware, will support formation of morning surface inversions that will trap pollutants. Sunny skies on Saturday will promote vertical mixing of the atmosphere, which should limit particle concentrations to the upper Moderate range. **Extended Forecast: On Sunday, clouds will increase ahead of an approaching cold front. Cloud cover will limit vertical mixing, and carry-over of pollutants from Saturday will contribute to rising particle concentrations. In addition, a wintery mix of precipitation beginning on Sunday afternoon will increase atmospheric humidity, which will promote particle formation. Consequently, particle concentrations will likely reach the Code Orange (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups) range on Sunday. The cold front will move through Delaware late Monday morning. Particle concentrations will begin the day in the upper Moderate to USG range, and fall gradually as winds pick up in the afternoon behind the cold front, with daily average air quality in the mid-to-upper Moderate range. -Huff
